I wanted to let all of you know that Desiree' had many wishes in her life. Desiree' wanted to become a professional Fashion Model, she fullfilled that dream locally where she resided, in the state of Texas, and she was scheduling to relocate to New York City, during the summer of 1999, to sign a contract with an agency there.
Desiree' had accomplished much in her short life. Among which, her photograph made the cover of a Texas and Southwestern- Louisiana magazine.
She wanted to complete High School early, and she did, on December 15th, 1998. She then sought acceptance to a local University, Lamar', and Lamar accepted her. Her acceptance to the University was on January 4th, 1999, the day she was murdered. Her intentions were to begin her higher education in Texas and then move onward to New York City in the summer, of 1999, to continue with her education there. Although it was going to be personally difficult to have her so far away from Texas, her Dad, Mel', resided there, and that helped us, her family, with that difficult decision. We all knew that Desiree', our angel, would succeed, and we all supported her personal decisions to realize her dreams.
Last week, on Tuesday, I received a call from New York, that Desiree' had also been accepted to the college that she had applied for there. Everything was working for Desiree, she had worked hard at her dreams and those dreams were becoming realized, producing fruits and taking firm rootings. It seemed, to at least the ones that loved her most, everyone realized the same quality and potential that we all already were aware of with her, Desiree'. It was another hard day for me. I had to tell the other person on the other end what had happened to my beautiful child. You have no idea, some of you may, but most may not, the re-living' of how the tragedy is replayed, time and again, for the survivors, even again, innocently.
Ironically, Desiree, had told me on her 16th birthday, that in the event of her death, that, she desired to be an "organ doner." In another one of her many 'life accomplishments, Desiree' became such. Other's out here', there', are now alive and living more quality lives because of her young sensitivities to the wellbeing of them, even without her knowing them', directly, beforehand. That Desiree'! She also explained to me how she wanted to be cremated upon that event and that her ashes be scattered to the winds of New York City. Two weeks after Desiree's murder, death, that was fullfilled.
Desiree's Dad and step-Mom, with myself, and her step-Dad, boarded a plane and made that awful trip to the city of her once, dreams, to fullfill her request to scatter her ashes. We all entered that city and arrived at our destination, the top of Empire State Building. From there, my baby was sprinkled, to the winds, of the North, the South, and the East, and of their West. We walked the platform, distributing the ashes, attempting to give every direction equal opportunity, and made sure of that. We knew, Desiree, now belonged to the winds, the heavens even.
While in New York last summer (1998) Desiree told her Dad that one day he would see her picture on a magazine on the newstands of NY. I want you to know that Desiree's final wish came true today, April 22, 1999. Her Dad and step-Mom called to inform us here in Texas, the "magazine" in which she landed a cover spot is currently sitting on 4 different News Stands in New York City, and also...at "Elite Modeling Agency."
Now please, if my only wish could ever come true, which it cannot, I would want my daughter to be rightfully returned to me, us all. Here, on our earth, with us. But since I know that that is not realistic, we all pray, that the "justice system" not fail Desiree, and the future daily victims of domestic violence, and us, her in a sense, "non-survivors, emotionally, of such tragic actions." Justice must prevail. For the sake of so many. This was not acceptable, not'. There were so many alternative routes to take, for Desiree's murderer. Mostly, as a fellow human-being to her, our now...Lost' Angel
