Protest Against Early Release
Send letters, emails, or faxes protesting the early release of John Christopher Engel

The following case is from Colorado and involves 2 murders and an attempted murder committed by a juvenile, John Christopher Engel. Engel received a sentence under Colorado's Juvenile Justice System and a sentence under the Adult System. His sentence under the Adult System is for 32 years with a stipulation that after serving 90 days, he can ask the court for a reconsideration of his sentence. Engel has completed his juvenile sentence and has begun serving his adult sentence. In the very near future, the judge will be making the final decision with regards to the reconsideration of Engel's sentence. The victims' family has asked for our help with sending letters to the Bolder County District Attorney's Office to oppose any consideration of releasing Engel or reducing his sentence. Please help be a voice for justice for this family and the victims who were brutally murdered by Engel.

Background

John Christopher Engel had plans to kill his parents, two teachers and numerous students who he felt didn't treat him correctly. On the fateful day of December 11, 1999, the lives of the Reinschmidt family were forever changed. Engel brutally murdered 82 year old, Catherine Reinschmidt, by hitting her repeatedly with a claw hammer, including clawing her face beyond recognition because she was inconveniently there at the time he chose to murder his parents. He then went after his adoptive mother, Mary Elizabeth Reinschmidt-Engel, with both the hammer and a knife, hitting and stabbing her as she ran through the house. The end came for Mary when she was stabbed in the heart. When Christopher's father, Tom Engel, returned home from his morning run, Christopher attacked him with a knife, injuring him on the head. Fortunately, Tom was able to subdue Christopher and call the police.

Losing Catherine and Mary in such a violent manner has traumatized the victims' family for life. Almost eight years have passed and for the family, it feels that this is a bad dream that will never go away. The fact that they need to work to convince the court that Christopher Engel should not be released, nor should he receive a reduced sentence, has added to their emotional suffering. Please help by submitting your letter to the Bolder Counsty District Attorney's Office as soon as possible.

Dear Mrs. Lacy

Re: John Christopher Engel Case No: 00CR52

As a concerned citizen, I am writing to urge your office to vigorously oppose any reduction in sentence at the upcoming hearing for John Christopher Engel. I oppose any form of release due to the fact that he is still a danger to the community at large since he planned to murder 11 people, but was stopped after brutally killing his mother and grandmother on December 11, 1999.

Due to the ultimate violent nature of the murders he committed to two human beings plus the brutal attack of his father, the state of Colorado has a duty as well as an obligation to protect society from such violent offenders. Justice demands that anyone capable of perpetrating the crimes of this nature must serve their just sentence in its entirety without any justification for early release.

To lessen the emotional trauma for the victims' family and because of the violent nature of Engel's crime, please consider keeping him in prison for the full 32 year sentence.

Thank you for your consideration,

Sincerely,

(Your Name)
