SHEPARD - In a joint effort with the San Jacinto County Sheriff's Department and the family of Mitchell Turner Byrd, Texans for Equal Justice, a statewide crime victim advocacy organization, will assist with the distribution of flyers in the hope of gaining additional information into the murder of Mitchell Byrd.
Mitchell Byrd was brutally murdered in November, 2000. His body was buried in a shallow grave in Shepard, Texas where it remained until August, 2001. The Harris County Medical Examiner's Office maintained custody of the victim's remains until March of 2002. The family contacted KHOU-TV Channel 11 out of Houston about their plight. It was only after the interest and investigation of KHOU-TV that the M.E.s Office released the victim's body to the family for burial.
Law enforcement officials are looking for additional details in the case. They are asking for media and public assistance. A $1,000 dollar reward is being offered to the individual who can assist them in identifying and locating anyone who may have been seen in, or driving Mitchel Byrd's 1974 gold Dodge Dart between November 13, 2000 and January 8, 2001.
